Super Smash Bros. Melee God Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman is refusing to get a full-time job despite admittedly making $2 an hour on Twitch.

The Smash community has been concerned for Mew2King for quite some time now. Even 12 years ago, Mew2King was telling fans that he was too poor to see a doctor despite his many medical conditions and traumas. He has continued to struggle financially over the years, even leading the FGC to mock him for his life choices and lashing out over his decision to allow tons of ads on his streams.

Despite all of the backlash, Mew2King has continued to stream Melee and coach. He is known for his complete dedication to the game, offering insane calculations after hours of labbing, despite the game offering essentially no money in return. As Melee veterans continue to leave the scene over abysmal prize pools, Mew2King won’t give up.

“I’m just gonna do what I love”: Mew2King refuses to work

Mew2King recently admitted that streaming isn’t going well for him. Despite dedicating “tens of thousands of hours” to Twitch, he currently gets about 20 to 30 viewers an hour, which translates to $2 an hour for him.

“I don’t have stream talent, I guess,” he said.

When fellow Melee God Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma heard this, he advised Mew2King to get a minimum wage job; something on the side to make sure he has the money he needs to live properly.

And this isn’t just “easy for you to say” advice: Hungrybox worked a full-time engineering job for the majority of his Melee career. It’s taken consistent high placements over the past two decades and becoming co-owner of Team Liquid for Hungrybox to quit his “real” job and become a full-time Melee content creator and competitor.

There is just no money in Melee.

Mew2King shot down the advice: “I’m just gonna do what I love, which is gaming. I’m just gonna do that forever.”

Right now, Mew2King’s strategy is to stream late at night, sometimes into the morning. He explained that most people have a “normal life schedule” and “a lot of friends,” so they go offline at 11 PM. This is when Mew2King starts, giving people someone else to watch when other streamers are offline.

Unfortunately, even his fans don’t tune in to his streams due to the unbearable number of ads he runs. However, many Smash players expressed sadness over Mew2King’s dire situation while respecting his hustle, dedication, and passion for Melee. While it’s been a tough go for Mew2King, he will always be a legend of the game.
