Turns out, Pokémon cards were a better investment than gold

If you invested in Pokémon cards five years ago rather than gold, you are now one step closer to retirement.

It all started when a normal investment account shared some interesting insight into Costco gold. The helpful “off the grid” guy said that Costco was selling 1 oz of gold for $2,500 two years ago. Today, that 1 oz is worth $5,000. He pointed out that this means gold has outperformed the SP500, Nasdaq, Dow Jones, and Bitcoin.

Pretty neat, huh?

Well, us dorks couldn’t let the normies have this one. Gold? WHATEVER. An account shared Dividend Hero’s tweet with a screenshot of his own. Gold? Meh. I raise you, Evolving Skies booster boxes!

In the screenshot, you could see that booster boxes of Evolving Skies, one of the most popular boosters in the competitive game, have skyrocketed in value over the last two years. In fact, investing $5,000 in these booster boxes two years ago when they were worth $525 would mean those scalpers and collectors would now have $23,800 worth of cards.

Compare that to investing $5,000 in Costco gold for $10,400 now and it looks like Pokémon has outperformed basically all other mainstream investments.

Of course, this comes as no surprise to anyone in the TCG scene. Pokémon cards have been overpriced beyond belief ever since Logan Paul made up random inflated numbers during his pack openings during COVID. Since Pokémon became a larger trend after that, prices have remained overblown and ridiculous for collectors and competitors alike.

Scalpers have continued to increase demand – and prices – of Pokémon cards over the past few years. When scalpers swipe all of the cards from websites, shelves, and pop-up events, they can hike up prices online. Since they are the only ones with the cards, clueless grandparents and tweens pay the price, and the demand continues.

While not every set has kept its value like Evolving Skies, it does go to show that certain Pokémon cards and packs remain a great investment to this day. Will the prices ever go down? Most likely. But that’s part of the risk. You gotta choose when to buy, when to sell, and when to say no to scalpers.
