Oman-Italy mission examines key archaeological sites in S Batinah

Muscat – Members of the Historical Association of Oman carried out a field visit to several archaeological sites in South Batinah recently, as part of efforts to review recent finds and raise public awareness of Oman’s historical legacy.

The visit was organised in coordination with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and included members of a joint Italian archaeological mission from the University of Bologna and University of Rome. The programme covered the Halban and Musllimat archaeological sites, and Bait al Ghasham Museum.

Specialists accompanying the delegation presented briefings on the main features of each site, outlining their historical importance and the outcomes of studies conducted in recent years. The presentations focused on the settlement sequence at the sites and archaeological evidence spanning several historical periods.

According to researchers, some artefacts uncovered at these locations date back to more than 3,000 years BC. The findings provide evidence of early human settlement in Oman and demonstrate the continuity of cultural interaction across the region, underlining the depth and diversity of the sultanate’s archaeological record.

In a press statement, Sayyid Nooh bin Mohammed al Busaidi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Historical Association of Oman, said the visit reflected the association’s commitment to improving cooperation with national institutions and international research missions. “The archaeological wealth of South Batinah represents an important historical record that confirms Oman’s place in the wider narrative of human civilisation,” he said.

Busaidi added that the association remains focused on supporting scientific research, documentation and publication related to archaeological sites, contributing to national identity and greater public awareness of Oman’s history.

Sultan bin Saif al Bakri, Adviser to the Minister of Heritage and Tourism, said the visit was significant for reviewing archaeological evidence on the ground and assessing preservation measures. “The findings provide tangible proof of Oman’s ancient history and diverse cultural heritage.”

Bakri highlighted the importance of cooperation with international missions, noting that such partnerships enhance research practices, facilitate the exchange of expertise and support efforts to safeguard national heritage. He added that documentation and promotion of Oman’s archaeological heritage, both locally and internationally, remain key priorities.
