Muscat – As part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard the nation’s cultural heritage, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourismhas issued the first edition of Guide to Identifying Cultural Properties at Risk of Illicit Trafficking, aimed at strengthening institutional and public awareness of the need to protect cultural assets and prevent illegal trade in these.
The guide offers a comprehensive overview of the various types, forms and characteristics of cultural properties, supported by illustrative images to aid accurate identification. It also outlines the legal and regulatory frameworks in force in the sultanate, alongside the relevant international conventions to which Oman is a signatory, reinforcing national and international efforts to combat the illicit trafficking of cultural property.
Designed as a practical reference, the publication seeks to support customs inspection personnel, related professionals and entities concerned with cultural heritage by enhancing capabilities in detection, monitoring and the effective protection of cultural assets.
In addition, the guide highlights Oman’s legislative framework governing the protection of cultural heritage, underscoring the sultanate’s commitment to national laws and international agreements, and reflecting its dedication to preserving cultural heritage as a core element of national identity.
The publication also emphasises the importance of coordination and integration among relevant authorities, calling for effective communication channels to facilitate joint action and achieve greater flexibility and cooperation in safeguarding cultural property for future generations.
