Saiq logs –0.1°C as winter chill grips parts of Oman

Muscat – Cool winter conditions and overcast skies have pushed temperatures down in several parts of the sultanate, with Saiq in Dakhliyah recording the lowest temperature in the last 24 hours.

According to figures released by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Saiq recorded a minimum temperature of –0.1°C, the lowest nationwide this season.

In the central and southern regions, Thumrait recorded 6.1°C, while Haima and Al Mazyunah registered 6.2°C. Yanqul recorded lows of 7.7°C.

Other areas also reported low readings, with Mahdha and Sunainah recording 8.4°C, followed by Hamra ad Duru and Qumayra at 8.6°C. Bahla recorded a minimum temperature of 8.7°C.

The CAA stated that all readings were taken from its meteorological stations across the sultanate and advised residents – particularly those in inland and elevated areas – to remain cautious, as temperatures are expected to stay low during early morning hours.

Meanwhile, several governorates experienced varying levels of rainfall, ranging from light to moderate, including Muscat, Dakhliyah, North Batinah and Musandam, as a result of the weather conditions that affected Oman over the past weekend.

Khasab in Musandam recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall of 215mm over a three-day period, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR).

Other areas in Musandam and northern Oman also recorded significant rainfall, with Bukha receiving 169mm and Dibba registering 162mm, while Madhahrecorded 56mm and Shinas 52mm. Moderate rainfall was reported in parts of North Batinah and Dakhliyah, including Mahdha (43mm) and Buraimi (19mm).

Lighter rainfall was recorded in interior regions such as Ibri (16mm), Yanqul (14mm) and Sunainah (12mm), while some coastal and desert areas reported minimal precipitation.

MAFWR said the rainfall contributed positively to groundwater recharge and surface water flow in wadis, but it urged the public to continue exercising caution during unstable weather conditions, particularly in low-lying areas and near wadis. The ministry added that it continues to monitor weather developments in coordination with relevant authorities and will issue updates as necessary.
