Emmerdale’s Frazer Hines has taken to Instagram to wish his followers a happy Christmas.
The actor, who is now 81, played the role of Joseph Sugden in the ITV soap from 1972-1994.
Joe Sugden was born in 1949. He was the youngest of Jacob and Annie Sugden’s three children. Joe’s brother Jack Sugden is Victoria (Isabel Hodgins), John (Oliver Farnworth) and Robert Sugden’s (Ryan Hawley) father.
Joe was described as a happy member of the Sugden family. One of his most memorable relationships was with Kathy Gimbel, an old friend.
Their journey together scandalised the village in the 70s and as a result, Kathy’s father shot himself.
Towards the end of the 70s, Joe was embroiled in a feud with farmer Phil Fletcher. During a confrontation, Phil shot himself but tried to blame Joe.
A few years later, Joe suffered from depression and alcoholism after learning about Mark’s death. He struggled to forgive himself for arguing with Mark on the night he died. Aware of Joe being unable to process what happened to Mark, Jack and Rachel urged him to spend time with Annie in Spain.
Joe left but in 1995, villagers discovered that Joe had died in a car crash.
Annie and Amos returned to the village for the funeral and during this period, Amos made a comment about how he always thought Joe would outlive him, hinting that Joe’s death potentially wasn’t an accident.

This week, Frazer decided to take to Instagram to share a message to his fans. He posted a selfie in a café, and wrote alongside: ‘A merry xmas to all my friends and readers’.
Since leaving Emmerdale, Frazer has gone on to appear in a variety of shows. He has credits in the Doctor Who audio series and this year, he appeared in Midsomer Murders.
In 2024, Frazer reprised his role as Sonny Troughton in Doctors, ahead of the show’s final ever episode.
