Oman hosts  its  first-ever Women’s Netball Championship

Muscat – In a landmark moment for women’s sport in the sultanate, Muscat Eagles Netball Club successfully hosted the country’s first-ever Women’s Netball Championship on December 6, at Bausher Club.

The historic tournament brought together six competitive teams for a full day of high-energy matches, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd from across the community.

Netball – a fast-paced, non-contact court sport played by two teams of seven – centres on precision passing, strategic movement, and teamwork as players work to score through the opponents’ ring. The championship showcased an impressive mix of talent, featuring players from Oman, the UK, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Iran, the Philippines, India, Australia, Syria, Kenya, and several other nations. The diversity on court underscored the sense of unity and inclusion that has come to define Oman’s growing netball community.

Spectators, teams, and guests praised the high standards and smooth organisation of the inaugural event. Special recognition was given to Malissa Shereen Nugera, Founder of Muscat Eagles Netball Club, along with the club’s executive committee and volunteers, whose commitment and vision made the milestone possible.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Malissa reflected on the significance of the moment and outlined her hopes for the future of women’s netball in the sultanate.

Women’s Netball Championship

How significant is hosting Oman’s first women’s netball championship?

Hosting Oman’s first women’s netball championship is a historic milestone for women’s sport in the country. It opens the door for Omani women and residents to participate competitively, builds confidence, promotes inclusivity, and marks the beginning of a long-term pathway toward establishing netball at national and international levels in Oman.

What does this achievement mean for the future of women’s sports in Oman?

This event shows what passionate community organisations can achieve. Muscat Eagles Netball Club has taken the lead in introducing and growing netball in Oman, driven entirely by volunteers, players, and supporters. While this initiative is community-led, we hope it will inspire greater recognition and future collaboration with government authorities to further develop women’s sports in the Sultanate.”

The tournament attracted strong community support. What does this tell you about public interest?

The turnout showed that the community is truly ready for netball. Parents from international schools were especially excited to see their children participate in a new and empowering sport. The support proves there is real demand for netball in Oman and that families want more opportunities for girls and women.

What were the biggest challenges in organising this first-of-its-kind event?

As the first women’s netball championship in Oman, the biggest challenge was building everything from scratch. We had to manage logistics, secure a venue, organise officials, and coordinate teams with very limited resources. Awareness and support structures for netball are still developing, but the passion of our volunteers and players made the event a success.

How did your team ensure  a high standard of organisation?

Our team focused on planning, teamwork, and attention to detail. Every member contributed—handling logistics, scheduling, officiating, and communication with discipline and passion. We followed international netball standards and ensured smooth coordination on match day. The dedication of our volunteers, coaches, and umpires was key to delivering a championship that players and spectators genuinely appreciated.

The championship featured players from many nationalities. How did you promote unity and inclusivity?

We created an environment where every player—regardless of nationality, background, or experience—felt welcomed and valued. From the beginning, we emphasised respect, teamwork, and a shared love for the sport. Mixed-nationality teams, friendly interactions, and a family-like atmosphere helped everyone connect naturally. This championship proved that sport has the power to unite people, and in Oman, that unity is truly beautiful.”

What stood out to you most in the teams’ performances?

The blend of experienced players and complete beginners stood out. Experienced athletes showed strong skill and control, while newcomers impressed with how quickly they adapted and gained confidence. All teams displayed teamwork, respect, and determination. The competition level was higher than expected, proving that Oman has a strong foundation for a vibrant netball community.

Do you believe this event will inspire more women and girls in Oman to join netball?

Absolutely. Many girls in Oman already enjoy basketball, and netball offers a similar but non-contact alternative that is safe, enjoyable, and highly team-oriented. This championship will encourage more girls and women to take up the sport, helping them build confidence, leadership, and competitive spirit. It is only the beginning of something much bigger for women’s sports in Oman.

Women’s Netball Championship

Are there plans to make this an annual event or part of a league?

Yes. Our aim is to turn this championship into an annual fixture and eventually build a full league structure. The enthusiasm from players, parents, and schools shows strong demand. With continued community support, we plan to introduce regular competitions, training programmes, and long-term pathways for women and girls to play netball year-round.

What message would you like to share with women and young girls interested in the sport?

My message is simple: don’t be afraid to start. Netball is a sport for everyone, and because it’s non-contact, it is safe and ideal for girls of all ages. Whether you are experienced or completely new, there is always a place for you on the court. Believe in yourself, take the first step, and discover the joy of being part of a team.
