For years, concealer was the one step in my makeup routine that never quite sat how I wanted it to. No matter how carefully I applied it, it creased, clung to dry patches, or disappeared by midday.
I assumed that it was just how my skin took to concealer, until I was told about a simple hack that completely changed the way my makeup looks and lasts. Following a conversation with Professional Hair and Makeup Artist Enya Sullivan, this small tweak has changed my makeup routine to look smoother, and last longer.
My previous technique consisted of placing three dots under my eye and then straight away using a small-headed brush to blend. Whilst this worked, I felt it faded easily as the day went on, and didn’t fully conceal under the eyes, getting caught in the fine lines.
Enya explains ‘Place your concealer of choice messily a small amount under the inner corner of the eye and outer corner, don’t touch the lash line. Let it sit there and continue to work on the rest of your face.
Once it’s been sat for a little while use a buffing brush and buff into the under eye area. As the concealer has time to set it will create heavier coverage. You could also use a small damp sponge to create a flawless finish.’
‘Once you’ve done that use a powder puff with loose powder that’s been rubbed onto the back of your hand or palm to get rid of excess and press into the under eye for a flawless finish that lasts all day and night.’
My chosen concealer is either the Erborian Super BB Concealer, retailing for £27, which is medium to full coverage and goes on lightly so that it doesn’t appear cakey on the skin. It is formulated with niacinamide, white ginseng complex & SPF 25 so your skin receives goodness whilst wearing.
My other favourite that applies so smoothly and effortlessly blends in with the skin is Sculpted by Aimee Satin Silk Longwear Concealer, which costs £16.
Following Enya’s advice of using a loose powder to finish the look, I’m a big fan of either Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, £38.50, or NYX’s Professional Makeup Wonder Snatch Powder, costing only £8.99. These both work effortlessly to seal the concealer and give it that last touch of smoothness and refinement.
