Fulltime Observations
- That was a solid 62-minute performance for Jamal Musiala to build on. Right before the goal, he was struggling to catch his breath but he still made the proper run and scored a beautiful game winner.
- Nicolas Jackson is no more than a body at this point. He is a streaky player at best but offers nothing to Bayern’s style of play. Is there any chance we can pick up Ivan Perišić on a six-month loan deal instead?
- Jonas Urbig’s long balls were VERY impressive. The pass that led to Harry Kane’s goal was sublime.
Bayern will return to Bundesliga action this weekend with a road match against 14th-place Hamburg. After securing a bye with a second place finish in the league phase, the first leg of Bayern’s Round of 16 draw in the Champions League will be March 10th or 11th.

85’: Substitution. Sacha Boey replaces Tom Bischof.
84’:GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 2-1. Jonas Urbig’s blast finds a streaking Luis Díaz. Harry Kane is somehow wide open in the middle of the box and absolutely buries his one-time finish. World class skill from Kane.
83’: Yellow cards. Joshua Kimmich and Guus Til are booked for a quick shoving match.
82’: Substitution. Couhaib Driouech replaces Ivan Perišić.
81’: Yellow card. Vincent Kompany is booked for arguing with the referee. The card doesn’t seem to calm him down at all.

46’: Substitution. Noah Fernandez replaces Dennis Man.
46’: Second half is underway. Time to put on the scoring boots and light it up!
Halftime Observations
- In the early possessions, Bayern’s attack focused on through balls to aggressive runners behind the PSV backline. None of the subsequent crosses found their mark in the first half but the strategy has shown some merit.
- PSV has opted to avoid sitting in a deep shell, playing their usual high press that mirrors Bayern’s setup. Both sides prefer to man-mark and win individual contests.
- For all the skill in Bayern’s attack today, this unit squandered too many 2v1 and 3v2 situations. It isn’t a question of selflessness, but basic decision making. Jamal Musiala, Lennart Karl, and Luis Díaz are playing way too fast and just need to settle into the moment to make the simple pass that leads to 1v1 situations with the goalkeeper.
- Jonas Urbig is 1,000% locked into this match with these reflex saves. After the mistake-laden performance against Augsburg, this is a great sign for Urbig’s development.
- Once the opening goal finally finds the back of the net, the floodgates will open up this match and it will become an endless highlight reel.

HT: This game is somehow scoreless after a wild first half.
35’: Yellow card. Jerdy Schouten is booked for a transition foul on Jamal Musiala.
26’: Nicolas Jackson rips a powerful shot from the top of the box but it is blocked by Matěj Kovář.
24’: Yellow card. Dayot Upamecano is booked for a physical challenge on Sergiño Dest.

6’: Tom Bischof hits a dangerous free kick but it glances over the bar.
1’: LET’S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!
In a shocking move, Vincent Kompany has elected to start Jamal Musiala and Nicolas Jackson over Michael Olise and Harry Kane. This is Musiala’s first start since the PSG clash that resulted in his knee injury. Jonas Urbig and Lennart Karl have struggled in recent performances, but Kompany has shown a propensity to lift up players through rough patches. Despite his contract negotiation issues, Dayot Upamecano is also back in the lineup.
Thanks to last week’s 2-0 win over union Saint-Gilloise, Bayern Munich clinched a top four spot in the Champions League “league phase” table. A draw or win against PSV Eindhoven will secure second place. If Arsenal somehow loses to FC Kairat, Bayern will have a unique opportunity to finish atop the table. In any of these scenarios, Bayern will have an advantage until the quarterfinal round and likely the semifinal as well.
On the flip side, PSV will be hunting for points to avoid elimination from the Champions League. Currently sitting with eight points, PSV is stuck in a dense area of the table and will be searching for a major upset to sneak into the knockout phase. With all 18 matches being played simultaneously, PSV will not know if they have done enough until the final whistle.
Prediction
Bayern wins 2-1. After the first Bundesliga loss of the season, Bayern will come out on fire. Michael Olise will score a beautiful left footed shot from outside the box and Jonathan Tah will power in a header from an Olise corner kick. PSV will score early in the second half but both teams will be content to hold the scoreline for the final 30 minutes.
