New initiative to support local onion farmers

Muscat – Oman Agriculture Development Company (OADC), in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, has announced plans to purchase locally produced onion from Omani farmers, as part of efforts to support agriculture and improve food security.

The initiative is being implemented in coordination with Oman Agricultural Association and the Central Fruit and Vegetables Market (Silal), aiming to provide farmers with stable market access and strengthen domestic supply chains.

In a statement, OADC said the programme seeks to encourage local farming, support sustainable agricultural livelihoods and reduce dependence on imports by promoting the marketing of locally grown produce. Farmers wishing to participate are invited to submit their applications through the company’s website.

OADC has outlined several conditions for participation, including compliance with the onion varieties approved by it and delivery of produce to designated company warehouses according to agreed schedules. Farmers are also required to meet quality specifications set out in contractual agreements, with deliveries made during official working hours and in line with approved standards.

The move forms part of wider government efforts to empower farmers, improve supply chain integration and strengthen the agricultural sector as a contributor to economic diversification. It also supports national strategies under Vision 2040, which place food security and local production at the centre of sustainable development.

Officials said such initiatives help provide farmers assured marketing channels, improve income stability and encourage the adoption of modern agricultural practices across the sultanate.

Latest figures from the National Centre for Statistics and Information show that Oman produced 17,393 tonnes of onions in 2024 from 1,214 acres. The sultanate imported 105,866 tonnes last year, highlighting the importance of such projects in closing the production gap and enhancing national food security.
