It was a bit of a mixed Christmas for Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) on Coronation Street. It was his first festive celebration with his new girlfriend Megan (Beth Nixon), but on the other hand he spent a large portion of the time lying unconscious in the ginnel.
Daniel’s relationship with Megan had incurred the wrath of Will Driscoll (Lucas Hodgson-Wale). Megan is officially Will’s athletics coach, but unofficially and in all sorts of wrong ways he firmly believes she’s his girlfriend, having been groomed by Megan into having an illicit relationship with her.
Sickened by the sight of Daniel and Megan cosying up around the turkey at the Driscoll’s Christmas dinner, Will later pounced on him in the ginnel, leaving Daniel sprawled unconscious, totally unaware of who’d attacked him.
Will was already in a relationship with Megan when the family moved to Weatherfield, and she was the reason he almost refused to make the move.
As far as his family are concerned, Megan is helping Will reach his full potential as a promising athlete, and they arranged for her to continue coaching him in Weatherfield, little realising that they were enabling Megan’s abuse of Will to continue.
When she started dating Daniel the situation became even more complex. Megan has assured Will that he’s the one she cares about and the relationship with Daniel is a convenient front, but Will isn’t convinced – and it’s not at all clear whether Megan is, either.
Daniel has spotted that Will has what he thinks is a crush on Megan and has warned him off, but he has no idea just how deep Will’s feelings are currently running.
After the attack on Christmas Day, Maggie (Pauline McLynn) covered up for her grandson by planting some of Daniel’s possessions so it looked like a homeless man had mugged him. Maggie doesn’t realise what Will’s true motivation was for the attack, however.
In upcoming episodes Will’s jealousy shows no signs of letting up. Meanwhile, Megan and Daniel are getting more and more close. On the occasion of Daniel’s son Bertie’s birthday, Will spots the couple carrying the little boy’s birthday cake and presents and this display of togetherness enrages him. Later he confronts Megan and demands to know whether she stayed over at Daniel’s.
When Daniel is heading out for work the next day he’s horrified to see that someone has spray painted something very rude on the car. Even worse, it’s not Daniel’s car but Ken (William Roache)’s. The absolute audacity.
Megan knows it was Will who vandalised the car and she confronts him about it, making it clear that she’s not impressed by his vendetta against Daniel.
