Mother arrested after video shows toddler fall out of moving car

A 35-year-old woman has been arrested after her 19-month-old child fell from a moving SUV in Fullerton, California, police have said.

The incident, captured on video, shows the SUV making a left turn at an intersection when the front passenger door suddenly opens and the toddler tumbles onto the road.

According to Fullerton police, the vehicle came to an abrupt stop, narrowly avoiding a collision with a car behind it.

Footage then shows the driver stepping out of the SUV, picking up the child and getting back into the vehicle before driving away.

Police said a witness reported the incident on January 24 after seeing it occur on January 20 and provided identifying details about the SUV.

Investigators later located the vehicle, the child and the woman at a residence. The driver, identified as Jacqueline Marie Hernandez, was taken into custody on suspicion of child abuse.

Authorities said the toddler suffered injuries consistent with the fall and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The child is expected to make a full recovery.

The incident remains under investigation.
