Oman backs Arab cooperation on AI, cybersecurity

Cairo – The Sultanate of Oman participated in the 29th session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Communications and Information, held last week in Egypt.

The Omani delegation was led by Abdullah bin Nasser al Rahbi, Oman’s Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, representing H E Eng Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.

The meeting reviewed ways to develop telecommunications and information technology sectors in Arab countries, keep pace with global digital transformation and strengthen joint Arab cooperation in modern technologies.

The council approved the formation of an Arab Artificial Intelligence Committee, tasked with coordinating Arab efforts in the field of AI.

Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, building capacities and exchanging expertise to address growing digital challenges.

In his address, Rahbi stressed the importance of strengthening joint Arab cooperation in cybersecurity, citing rising global cyber threats and the risks they pose to digital infrastructure and information security.

He outlined recent progress made by Oman in communications and information technology, including the development of communications infrastructure, expansion of broadband and fibre-optic networks, digitisation of government services and strengthening data governance. These efforts, he said, aim to support digital transformation and sustainable development.

Rahbi also highlighted Oman’s initiatives to promote investment in communications and information technology, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. He underlined the sultanate’s focus on building national capabilities, encouraging innovation and using modern technologies to improve service quality and support the national economy.

Through its participation, Oman reaffirmed its support for Arab initiatives to strengthen integration in communications and information technology, and for efforts that promote the safe and responsible use of modern technologies in line with the interests and aspirations of Arab countries.
