This article contains spoilers for tonight’s Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on YouTube and ITVX.

Shona Platt’s (Julia Goulding) life was on the line in tonight’s episode of Coronation Street, as she and her unborn baby underwent a risky surgery.

David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) was shocked when he found a pregnancy test last year, especially when Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) pointed out that it could belong to his teenage daughter, Lily.

It came as a relief when Shona confessed that it was hers, but the joy of a new addition was soon overshadowed when a scan revealed a mass on the baby’s neck.

Shona and David were left with a difficult choice to make as the doctor explained their options. There was a chance they’d be able to save the baby, but it was a risky operation that could put both Shona and their daughter’s lives in danger.

Though David couldn’t bear to risk losing Shona, the mum-to-be put her foot down and decided to go ahead with the surgery.

Unfortunately, things took a worrying turn when Shona and David were caught up in the carnage of the Corriedale pile-up earlier this week, which pushed Shona into early labour.

This was obviously a distressing development, given that the surgery needed to be done during the birth.

In tonight’s episode, Shona made it to Weatherfield General, but was horrified to learn that her surgeon was stranded abroad after his flight was cancelled.

Thankfully, the hospital had surgeon Vincent Harper on standby, and he managed to calm the couple’s nerves before the long and arduous procedure began.

In order to remove the mass and save the baby, the team needed to operate on her while she was still attached to Shona’s umbilical cord.

While there were some slight problems during the procedure, with the baby ultimately needing a tracheotomy to be able to breathe, everything seemed to go well.

After hours of anxious waiting, David was finally given the good news that both mum and baby had pulled through.

As Shona admitted that she hadn’t wanted to think of names in case she tempted fate, David revealed that he had the perfect idea. We won’t spoil the surprise, but it is certainly a fitting name for the newest member of the Platt family.

Shona and David were obviously over the moon with their little bundle of joy, especially after the last few days.

With the street mourning the loss of Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank), who, unbeknownst to his neighbours, was killed by Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) amid the chaos of the crash, David was sure that the vicar had been looking down on them.

The news of Shona’s safe delivery also brought joy to Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove), who was particularly affected by the loss of her son-in-law.

Without realising it, Bernie even got to meet Mr Harper, the surgeon, as she served him in the café.

How will the rest of the Platt family and their neighbours react to Shona and David’s joyous news?
