Amanda Seyfried is happily basking in the success of her film The Housemaid, which she’s currently starring in alongside Sydney Sweeney.

The Mean Girls and Mamma Mia actress, 40, stars in the mystery thriller – directed by Paul Feig – which has performed incredibly well at the box office.

Two weeks into its run, The Housemaid has earned back around £100million from a £26m budget, a gross increase of almost five times.

Its success mirrors that of Paul Feig’s last thriller film starring two female leads – the 2018 film A Simple Favor, which grossed around £72m from a budget of £15m.

And much like A Simple Favor eventually got a sequel – starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively again from the first film – Amanda reckons The Housemaid will get one as well.

‘No one’s said anything about [Housemaid] number two, but I guarantee there will be a number two. And I almost guarantee that I will be some small cameo,’ she told Variety.

‘[The Housemaid] is about Sydney’s character and her working for a new family – there’s so much that happens, especially with [Michele Morrone]’s character Enzo. I really want to see [what happens].’

The Housemaid follows the story of a young girl with a troubled past (Millie, played by Sydney) who becomes the live-in housekeeper for a wealthy woman (Nina, played by Amanda) and her husband.

However, Millie discovers that dark secrets lie behind Nina and her husband’s front door, causing all three of their lives to unravel quickly.

Nina’s husband, Andrew, is played by It Ends With Us actor Brandon Sklenar, while Michele Morrone stars as Enzo, another grounds and housekeeper.

The film is based on the 2022 novel of the same name by Freida McFadden, which became a huge success after being published by Bookouture.

Amanda’s comments about a sequel seem to be supported by the fact that Freida has written and published two more novels in the series, The Housemaid’s Secret and The Housemaid Is Watching.

A short story, titled The Housemaid’s Wedding, was published at the end of 2024, but Freida has confirmed that a fourth novel in the series will not be published.

The film has finally given Sydney Sweeney a box office winner after a tough year, with two of her other films struggling to produce the desired impact with audiences.

Echo Valley and in particular, Christy were both hit by financial losses after limited releases, while critically, both films received a mixed reaction, despite Christy being considered a ‘showcase’ for Sydney.

Metro critic Tori Brazier said of The Housemaid: ‘The Housemaid is a pulpy tongue-in-cheek adaptation of a breezy thriller that will slip down smoothly if you’re looking to digest something in sharp contrast to Christmas schmaltz.’
