This article contains spoilers for tonight’s Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on YouTube and ITVX.
Accusations have been flying all over the cobbles in the aftermath of Billy Mayhew’s (Daniel Brocklebank) death in Coronation Street – but so far no one has landed on the actual killer.
Billy died during the epic Corriedale pile-up earlier this week, though it wasn’t the crash that killed him. His death was a result of Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) trapping him in the burning minibus.
As the vehicle exploded, Theo narrowly escaped with his life, but Billy wasn’t so lucky.
In tonight’s episode, it was clear the police wanted someone to answer for the crime, and unfortunately, it was Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) who was on their radar.
Though there were multiple vehicles involved, the police had determined which car had been the one to ultimately cause Billy’s death, and they mistakenly believed that Debbie had been driving it.
This was all part of a cruel plan that Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) had cooked up to save his own skin.
In reality, it was Carl who got behind the wheel drunk, with Debbie throwing herself into the passenger seat to try and call his bluff. However, he sped off, straight into the scene of the crash.
It was there that he began to cover his tracks by dragging an unconscious Debbie into the driver’s seat.
When she paid him a visit in the hospital the following day, he cruelly used her dementia to try and convince her that they had swapped places because she was worried about him being drunk, and had been the one driving when the car collided with the minibus.
Though Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) tried to make her see that Carl was lying to her, even going so far as to tell her that the bruises from the seatbelt would prove where she was sitting, Debbie wouldn’t have it.
In tonight’s episode, she faced an interrogation from the police, where she stuck to her promise to cover for Carl by making out that they had swapped places in the car because he felt ill, leaving out that he had been drinking.

However, the officer quickly caught her lie, revealing that the hospital had confirmed Carl to have been well over the limit.
Over the course of her questioning, it was revealed that Debbie had also been over the limit, and that an eyewitness had reported that the car was being driven erratically.
In a cruel move, the detective told Debbie that it was her fault Billy was dead, and that everyone would have got out alive had she not driven irresponsibly.
Tragically, Debbie was charged with death by dangerous driving and driving while drunk, much to the horror of her family.
This left Kevin furious, as he couldn’t believe that she was still covering for Carl.
With Kevin insisting she’ll go to prison and Carl still dripping poison in her ear, will Debbie end up taking the fall for Carl’s crime?
