2025 has been full of surprises – especially when it comes to the world of showbiz. There was the Coldplay kiss cam, Katy Perry and several other celebrities getting launched into space, and more than a few bizarre moments from the endless Wicked press tour. And alongside the weird, wonderful and sometimes controversial moments, there have of course been several celebrity couples hard-launching their new relationships. While some might seem an obvious fit, others are a little more surprising. Here are seven new celebrity relationships that shocked us this year… (Picture: Getty/Instagram)

1. Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau

By far the most surprising new relationship of the year is between Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau. Not just because pop star Perry began the year with her partner of nine years and fiancé, actor Orlando Bloom, but because it’s not every day that a relationship is struck up between a major pop star and a former prime minister. In July, just a few weeks after Bloom and Perry publicly announced their split, she was spotted on a dinner date in Montreal with the former Canadian PM. Soon after, Trudeau attended one of her concerts with his teenage daughter and, in October, Katy and Justin were snapped embracing on her luxury yacht off the Californian coast. 2. Chris Hughes and JoJo Siwa

Another unlikely pairing, the chances of ex-Love Islander Chris Hughes and Dance Moms star JoJo Siwa ever crossing paths were slim, but they both found themselves in the Celebrity Big Brother house in April this year. At the time, JoJo Siwa was in a relationship with Australian star Kath Ebbs, but the pair called it quits when Siwa exited the house. Throughout the series, viewers were convinced something was going on between Chris and JoJo, as the pair had clearly formed a strong bond. They reunited quickly after leaving the house, despite the distance between their homes, and confirmed their relationship a few weeks later. They’ve been going strong ever since. 3. Billy Ray Cyrus and Elizabeth Hurley

Actress Elizabeth Hurley and singer-songwriter Billy Ray Cyrus first hit headlines in April this year after sharing a picture together on Instagram with a decidedly romantic vibe. Posing together, leaning on a fence in a grassy field, Hurley wore jeans, a blue checked shirt and a straw cowboy hat while Cyrus kissed her cheek. Neither confirmed the relationship publicly at the time, but they went red carpet official in Rome in May, and that same month Billy Ray Cyrus’ daughter, pop star Miley Cyrus, weighed in on the romance. Of her dad’s new relationship, the singer said: ‘At first, it’s hard because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, “yes, that’s your dad – but that’s just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy.” So my adult self has caught up. 4. Sydney Sweeney and Scooter Braun

Sydney Sweeney has had quite the year, having starred in a number of blockbuster movies including boxing biopic Christy and the recently released The Housemaid, as well as whipping up controversy with her American Eagle campaign, which many accused of promoting white supremacist ideas. With all that going on, her new romance with businessman Scooter Braun has somewhat flown under the radar. The pair were first linked over the summer after crossing paths at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s wedding, months after Sweeney ended her engagement to fiancé Jonathan Davino. Neither party has publicly confirmed the romance, but they’ve since been spotted on dates together and a source recently told People that they’re ‘in a committed relationship and things are serious’. 5. Curtis Pritchard and Ekin-Su Culculoglu

Two Love Island contestants might not seem like such a surprising pairing, but who would’ve thought that Ekin-Su, most famous for her sneaky terrace antics, would end up with Curtis Pritchard, most famous for wanting to make everyone a coffee in the morning. And yet the pair hit it off on the 2025 series of Love Island: All Stars. They’ve since split, however, with Ekin-Su writing on Instagram in July: ‘I wanted to share that Curtis and I have decided to go our separate ways. It’s been a really tough decision, but one made with a lot of love and respect for one another. 6. Zara McDermott and Louis Tomlinson

Not necessarily a surprising pairing, perhaps, but ex-Love Islander Zara McDermott’s split from Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson certainly came as a shock to fans in January this year. The duo had been together for five years and were something of a reality power couple, but Zara has since found love elsewhere with ex-One Direction band member Louis Tomlinson. 7. Harry Styles and Zoe Kravitz

After wrapping up his mammoth Love On Tour in 2023, Harry Styles has remianed largely out of the public eye (save for a very impressive race at Tokyo Marathon in March). But in the summer he was linked to actress Zoe Kravitz, and the pair have been spotted stepping out together a number of times since then.
