The Caretaker Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), South South Zone, Elder Emma Ogidi, on Monday accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of being “economical with facts” amid the ongoing crisis within the party.
Ogidi also expressed doubts that INEC could conduct free and fair elections in the country in the future.
The statement comes after INEC, citing existing court judgments and unresolved legal processes, rejected the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee of the PDP.
Reacting to the decision, Ogidi highlighted that INEC participated in the PDP national convention process that produced the Turaki-led leadership.
He said: “INEC has been economical with facts, and this is not good for an umpire. We invited INEC to our 101st NEC meeting and our 102nd meeting. In both meetings, INEC was present and even signed the attendance register. They gave us their attendance register to sign, and we also gave them our copy. INEC saw us discuss the convention, including which states were qualified to attend. Yet, surprisingly, INEC has refused to comment on this, even in court.”
Ogidi questioned INEC’s ability to conduct unbiased elections, adding: “So, how do you think that INEC can conduct any election again in this country that will not be biased?”
He further warned that the PDP may take the matter international, emphasizing: “You cannot frustrate a leading opposition party. It is against democracy; you cannot destroy democracy.”
The comments underscore the growing tension between the PDP and INEC amid ongoing legal and political disputes over party leadership.
