Ogun State, Nigeria – Two foreign nationals tragically lost their lives in a road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State on Monday morning.
The accident occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m. within the Makun axis of the busy expressway, according to a statement issued by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Information and Strategy.
“Anthony Joshua and three other individuals were travelling from Lagos to Sagamu when the sport utility vehicle they were in reportedly rammed into a stationary truck,” Akinmade stated. “Preliminary reports indicate that two male foreign nationals died on the spot. Their remains have since been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.”
Joshua and the driver of the vehicle were rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy and immediately taken to a hospital, where they are receiving medical attention. Other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and are also under medical care.
The SUV involved in the crash was severely damaged and has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division (MTD) office. Efforts are ongoing to tow the stationary truck to the same location to facilitate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Describing the incident as “deeply unfortunate and painful,” the Ogun State Government expressed condolences to the families, friends, and associates of the deceased. The statement urged motorists to exercise caution and comply strictly with traffic regulations, particularly during the festive season when road traffic is typically high.
The government also called on road safety officers and other security agencies to intensify surveillance and enforcement across the state to prevent further tragedies.
“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident,” the statement concluded, while praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and the speedy recovery of those injured.
