Over 4,500 join Nakhal Shathoon hike to promote health, tourism

Nakhal – More than 4,500 participants from across the sultanate took part in the Nakhal Shathoon Hiking Event, a community initiative aimed at promoting health awareness, cultural engagement and domestic tourism, on Saturday.

Organised by the Nakhal Adventure and Hiking Team, the 11km walk began at 7am from Ain al Thawarah, one of the wilayat’s most prominent natural landmarks. Walking enthusiasts, sports teams and community groups of different age groups joined the route, which wound through palm groves, agricultural areas and scenic trails reflecting Nakhal’s distinctive natural character.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Mohammed al Alawi, head of Muscat Hiking Team and a participant, said the hike lasted around four hours, including brief rest stops, and was conducted under organised supervision reflecting the growing capacity of local teams to manage large-scale community sporting events.

“Participants praised the level of coordination and the inclusive environment, which encouraged families and first-time walkers to take part,” he said.

Alawi noted that the strong turnout highlighted the rising popularity of walking as an accessible activity suitable for all segments of society. He added that the initiative extended beyond physical exercise to promote health and cultural awareness, while strengthening social ties among participants.

The event supported domestic tourism by showcasing Nakhal’s natural attractions, particularly Ain al Thawarah, as ideal destinations for outdoor activities. Combining sport with tourism, he said, contributes to the local economy and encourages residents to explore Oman’s diverse landscapes.

Around 90 adventure teams and institutions from different parts of the sultanate participated, underscoring the expanding role of voluntary walking groups in promoting healthy lifestyles within local communities.

The event also saw participation of the Omani Women’s Association in Nakhal, which set up a support corner, highlighting the importance of community partnerships in health-focused initiatives.

Alawi said Nakhal was selected for its strong natural and tourism potential. The hike concluded in a positive atmosphere, with participants calling for similar events to be held regularly, citing their contribution to public health awareness and community wellbeing.
