LIVIGNO, ITALY—In what has become the central focus of his primetime broadcasts night after night, NBC sportscaster Mike Tirico has devoted huge swaths of Winter Games coverage this week to demanding answers from Olympic athletes about what happens to their old drug-test urine. “Madison, Evan, everyone’s talking about the judging controversy that cost you gold, but before we get into that, I want to talk about your urine—specifically what they do with it after they’re done testing it for drugs, because this is elite urine from world-class athletes, which I assume is extremely valuable,” Tirico said when he interviewed U.S. ice dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates after their heartbreaking second-place finish, repeatedly interrupting fellow commentator Tara Lipinski’s questions about their performance to grill the pair about official urine protocols and whether the sample is returned to them or repurposed for science—an inquiry he has pursued in nearly every on-air segment so far at the Games. “They’re obviously not just flushing it down the toilet like a normal person’s pee. That’d be insane. My guess is they’re studying the pee’s DNA to unlock sports secrets. Can you confirm? Or if not, can you take me to the laboratory where they keep it so I can investigate? I trust the viewers at home are curious too.” According to witnesses, Tirico was later seen directing a camera crew into a designated athlete restroom in hopes a competitor would let him document their urine cup’s journey through the testing process.
