The Nigeria Customs Service has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s blue economy by intensifying anti-smuggling operations and declaring zero tolerance for illicit activities along the eastern waterways.
The Service made this known on Tuesday during a media briefing in Calabar by the Customs Area Controller of the Eastern Marine Command, Comptroller Anderson Jaja.
Comptroller Jaja said that under his leadership, the Eastern Marine Command has adopted proactive strategies that have significantly suppressed smuggling activities within its area of responsibility.
He explained that the Command is focused on supporting legitimate trade conducted through approved routes, adding that six new operational boats have recently been added to its fleet to enhance patrol and enforcement across the waterways.
According to him, the effectiveness of these measures was evident in the seizures recently made by the Command.
The seized items, he said, included textile materials, used clothing, tyres, pharmaceuticals, scrap metals, consumable beverages, wines, as well as alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, all of which pose serious risks to the Nigerian economy.
Comptroller Jaja stressed that smuggling would not be tolerated under his watch, noting that the Command would not give any room, however small, for illegal activities to thrive.
He disclosed that the total duty paid value of the seized items stood at N172,497,203.
He added that the seizures should serve as a clear warning to smugglers, as the Command continues efforts to sanitise Nigeria’s eastern waterways.
The Controller said the Command remains committed to stimulating legitimate trade and strengthening partnerships with host communities, adding that all necessary resources are being deployed to suppress smuggling across the maritime sector.
He urged regional business leaders to take advantage of the Comptroller General of Customs’ trade consultation initiative, stressing that the Service is fully committed to supporting only legitimate traders operating through lawful channels.
Comptroller Jaja warned that anyone attempting to use the Eastern Marine Command’s area of operation for illicit activities would be decisively dealt with.
He also commended the Comptroller General of Customs for providing six additional boats to the Command, describing the move as a boost to operational efficiency and the morale of officers and men.
He concluded by warning smugglers that the Command would stop, track down, and dismantle all illegal operations within its jurisdiction, adding that its resolve to eradicate smuggling remains firm and unwavering.
