Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of resisting the electronic transmission of election results out of fear that it could lose future elections.
According to Amaechi, opposition parties must unite and take a firm stand against what he described as an attempt by a single party to dominate the electoral process.
“I believe that the opposition parties should come out PDP, ADC, everybody should be out to protest against the attempt of one party,” Amaechi said.
He dismissed claims that such protests could be hijacked by opposition forces, questioning the APC’s own actions.
“If we come out, and they say the opposition has hijacked the protest, what is APC doing? Are they not hijacking? What are they afraid of? I thought they said they have 31 governors. Tinubu is not Jonathan. The only way a good politician will know he has done well is by the people.”
Amaechi further wondered why the ruling party would feel threatened despite boasting of several governors and high-profile defections from opposition parties into its fold.
He also expressed skepticism that the concerns of Nigerians would be addressed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio or President Bola Tinubu, stressing that opposition parties and civil society groups would continue to push back until the decision is overturned.
Meanwhile, security was tightened around the National Assembly on Tuesday as operatives of the Nigeria Police Force blocked major access roads ahead of an emergency plenary session scheduled by the Senate.
The ongoing protest is being coordinated by human rights activist Aisha Yusuf, alongside various civil society organisations that began the demonstration on Monday.
