Former England captain Wayne Rooney has warned that Tottenham Hotspur are firmly involved in a Premier League relegation battle following their continued poor run of form.
Spurs slipped to a 2–0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford, extending their winless streak to seven league matches and leaving them 15th on the table, just six points above the relegation zone.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former Manchester United striker said Tottenham’s position and recent results mean they cannot dismiss the threat of relegation, especially with teams around them beginning to pick up points.
Rooney pointed to improved performances from clubs such as West Ham and Nottingham Forest as further evidence that Tottenham will need to remain cautious as the season progresses.
The defeat at United was compounded by the first-half dismissal of captain Cristian Romero, who was sent off for a late challenge on Casemiro. It was the defender’s sixth red card in a Spurs shirt, a record that has increasingly drawn scrutiny.
While Rooney acknowledged that the decision could be viewed as harsh, he said Romero’s tendency to lose discipline has been a recurring issue during his time at the club.
Rooney also criticised the timing of Romero’s recent public comments about Tottenham’s injury situation, suggesting that such remarks only add to the pressure on head coach Thomas Frank.
The former England international expressed sympathy for Frank, who took charge last summer following the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou despite the club’s Europa League triumph. Rooney said the demands of the job have taken a visible toll on the Danish manager.
Tottenham finished 17th last season and face renewed uncertainty this campaign as questions continue to mount over leadership, discipline and results on the pitch.
