A24 has successfully won the rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise following an intense bidding competition. The acclaimed studio already has two projects lined up to revive the iconic horror franchise, including a TV show and a movie. The Running Man star Glen Powell is attached to both projects as an executive producer through his Barnstorm production company.
What do we know about A24’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre TV show and movie?
According to Variety, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series will be directed by The Long Walk writer JT Mollner. It will serve as A24’s first project for the franchise. Besides Powell, it will also be executive-produced by Dan Cohen for Barnstorm, Ben Ross for Image Nation, Stuart Manashil, and Roy Lee and Steven Schneider for Spooky Pictures, along with original 1974 movie co-writer Kim Henkel for Exurbia Films. In addition, Ian Henkel and Pat Cassidy are also producing for Exurbia Films.
“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of my favorite films,” Powell said in a statement. “It defined a generation of horror films, and over half a century after its release, it remains one of the definitive movies of my home state. I’m honored to have Barnstorm help bring in a new chapter for such an iconic title and franchise. With a marquee home in A24 and visionary filmmaker with JT Mollner, alongside our top-shelf producing partners, I couldn’t have dreamed of a better team for such a dream property.”
Mollner added, “I’ve said publicly that I’m not interested in remaking perfect films, and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a perfect film. Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel created something bold, transgressive, and truly seminal that holds up even today as the gold standard for horror. When the opportunity for a long-form exploration into this world arose, I saw it as a fresh way in, as well as a way to honor the existing folklore. I can’t imagine better partners for this approach than A24. This is truly an honor.”
As for the movie, the project is said to be in the early stages of development. The TV show’s producing team is also attached to the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. At the moment, the studio hasn’t enlisted a director for it.
“It was a difficult decision, but A24’s embrace of boundary-testing genre film, and its record of working with artists who are inclined to test boundaries made them a compelling choice,” Henkel said. “Plus, we believe having a great creative and producing team — JT Mollner, Roy Lee, Dan Cohen, and Glen Powell —in place gives us the best shot at a series that could be genuinely eye-opening and unexpected. There’s an epic tale lurking in the Chainsaw backstory.”
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise centers around Leatherface and his backwoods family, who terrorize innocent visitors trespassing on their lands in the isolated Texas countryside. The first installment was directed by Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist) in 1974. Before the A24 acquisition, the franchise had a total of ten films, with the most recent entry being Netflix’s 2022 adaptation. The film series has a combined gross of over $252 million worldwide.
