ABUJA – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the Senate over its failure to promptly pass amendments to the Electoral Act, saying the delay reflects a lack of regard for Nigerians and the country’s democratic values.
The position was expressed by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP backed by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
The party said the continued delay was worrisome, given the importance Nigerians attach to the Electoral Act and its role in strengthening the electoral process.
Speaking on the matter, the National Publicity Secretary of the Makinde-backed PDP NWC, Comrade Ini Ememobong, said the Senate’s handling of the Electoral Act was disappointing and out of tune with public expectations.
“The Senate’s inability to expeditiously pass the Electoral Act clearly shows the level of regard, or lack of it, that the institution has for Nigerians and for democratic values. If there is any piece of legislation Nigerians have consistently looked forward to, it is the Electoral Act. Yet, it has been repeatedly delayed, revealing the scant regard and little premium the Senate places on the genuine desires and urgent needs of the people.
“This is particularly sad because the Senate, as one of the key legislative chambers, is supposed to represent the highest ideals of democracy. It is meant to be the fulcrum on which democracy thrives and a direct mirror of the people’s will. When it acts in ways that are clearly at odds with what those who elected them want, it becomes obvious that we have a serious challenge on our hands,” Ememobong stated.
Describing the delay as condemnable, the PDP spokesman urged the Senate to act without further delay, insisting that the time for action had already elapsed.
“This situation is condemnable. We once again call on the Senate to act expeditiously, time is already gone. Should it really take three full years to pass a piece of legislation aimed at improving the electoral process? That is the fundamental question,” he added.
