Senators Lau, Manu dump PDP for APC, Akpabio warns ruling party on managing growth

ABUJA – Two serving Senators from Taraba State, Shusibu Isa Lau (Taraba North) and Haruna Manu (Taraba Central), have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defections were announced on Thursday in letters addressed to the Senate, read by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

In his letter, Senator Lau cited growing concerns about the internal direction of the PDP as the reason for his defection, stating: “I hereby express my intention to defect from the People’s Democratic Party and to join the All Progressives Congress. I have become increasingly concerned about the party’s direction on internal issues.”

Senator Manu, in his letter, explained that his decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders and a careful assessment of prevailing political realities. “I arrived with due respect to formally notify the Senate of my decision to withdraw my membership from the PDP and to align myself with the All Progressives Congress. The decision follows deep reflection, consultations with my constituents, political associates, and key stakeholders, as well as an assessment of the developmental aspirations of the people I represent,” he said.

Following the announcements, Senate President Akpabio urged the ruling APC to manage its growing membership carefully to prevent internal conflicts. He also remarked on the opposition parties, noting that the few remaining parties are keeping an eye on APC, waiting for opportunities to join the ruling party.

With the latest defections, the composition of the Senate now stands at: APC – 80; PDP – 21; Labour Party (LP) – 2; All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – 1; New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) – 1; and African Democratic Congress (ADC) – 1.
