Ray Romano is stepping into a new family role in his latest television project for HBO Max. The actor will portray a widowed father of five as the series explores how a family adjusts after the loss of its central figure.

Ray Romano to lead How to Survive Without Me pilot at HBO Max

Ray Romano will star in the HBO Max drama pilot How to Survive Without Me, according to Deadline.

Greg Berlanti, Bash Doran, and Warner Bros. Television are producing the pilot. Ray Romano plays Leo, a newly widowed patriarch of the De Angelis family, who steps into the lead parenting role after the death of his wife Beverly. The story follows the family as they work to stay connected and navigate life without their matriarch, who leaves behind a final message to guide them from beyond.

Berlanti and Doran wrote the pilot, developing it from a story they co-created with Robbie Rogers. The project reunites Romano and Berlanti, who previously collaborated on the 2024 Apple movie Fly Me to the Moon. Berlanti and Doran wrote the role of Leo specifically for Romano. The project joins American Blue as one of two pilots HBO Max is developing under a new model that features 15+ episodes per season, modest budgets, and annual releases.

“We are so excited to work with Ray on How to Survive Without Me,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Max Original Programming. “The show harkens back to the kinds of aspirational family dramas that Greg does so well.” Clancy Collins White, President of Creative Affairs at Warner Bros. Television, added, “Ray is a beloved icon who has an incredible gift for bringing both depth and levity to every character he portrays.”

WME, LBI Entertainment, The Conversation Company, and Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka represent Ray Romano. He will appear in Season 2 of Netflix’s Running Point and has previously starred in Everybody Loves Raymond, No Good Deed, Made for Love, The Irishman, and The Big Sick. Greg Berlanti, Bash Doran, Robbie Rogers, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman serve as executive producers.
