PDP Tussle: Wike-backed faction axes zonal structures, shifts convention

ABUJA — The Nyesom Wike-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dissolved key zonal party structures and adjusted the date of the party’s national convention, a move widely viewed as a recalibration of internal power dynamics ahead of the gathering.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the PDP National Caretaker Working Committee and made public on Tuesday in Abuja by the committee’s Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, who briefed journalists shortly after the meeting.

Jungudo said the meeting reviewed critical party issues and arrived at what he described as far-reaching resolutions with implications for the party’s immediate future.

One of the resolutions, he explained, concerned the date of the PDP’s national convention earlier announced by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

“Recall that yesterday, during the NEC meeting, a date was announced for the national convention of the party, which was billed to hold on the 28th and 29th of March,” he said.

According to him, the committee later revisited the timetable and approved a slight adjustment.

“However, after careful consideration of certain factors, the date has been slightly adjusted for the convention to take place on the 29th to the 30th of March, instead of the earlier 28th–29th of March,” Jungudo said.

Beyond the convention date, the committee also announced the dissolution of some zonal and state party structures.

“Secondly, the NEC working committee has equally dissolved the North-West, South-West Zonal Committees, and Plateau State Working Committee,” he said.

Jungudo added that interim leadership arrangements would soon be put in place in the affected zones and state.

“Furthermore, the timetable approved for the congresses in the states, zonal, and ward congresses will take effect as approved by NEC,” he said.

On preparations for the national convention, he noted that consultations would precede the constitution of the planning body.

“The National Caretaker Working Committee will consult widely before the announcement of the National Convention Planning Committee,” Jungudo said.

He stressed that the resolutions outlined represented the major outcomes of the meeting and reflected the key decisions reached by the National Caretaker Working Committee.
