Firefighters tried to rescue a woman from a burning bungalow in Sheffield, but although they managed to pull her from the building, she could not be saved.
Fire broke out at the property in the Upperthorpe area of Sheffield at around 10.45pm on Saturday night.
Crews responded to the incident on Hardy Place, and were able to bring it under control and leave by midnight.
The woman who was inside ‘sadly died at the scene’, firefighters said.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said in a statement: ‘Firefighters from Central and Rivelin fire stations responded to a fire at a bungalow on Hardy Place, Sheffield at around 10.45pm on Saturday night.

‘A woman was brought out of the property, but she sadly died at the scene.
‘Firefighters left the incident shortly after midnight.
‘An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.’
South Yorkshire Police said they were supporting the fire service, who were leading the investigation into the blaze.
On Boxing Day, there was another deadly fire where a mum and her two children died, despite efforts from her policeman husband to save the family.
Fionnghuala Shearman, known to friends as Nu, her daughter Eve, seven, and son, Ohner, four, were trapped in the burning house on Brimscombe Hill, near Stroud, Gloucestershire, at around 3am on Friday.
The fire caused the roof of the mid-terrace Cotswold stone cottage to fall in, while the ceilings and stairs have also collapsed.
Det Supt Ian Fletcher said: ‘Due to the ferocity of the intense fire, the parents were unable to get to the bedroom.
‘The father, a serving Gloucestershire Police officer, smashed his way out of the house via a bathroom window in order to try and get to the children’s bedroom from the outside, however he was unable to do so.
‘When he returned to the bathroom, the fire had spread and despite all of his determined efforts, he was unable to re-enter the home via any point in which he tried.
‘At this time this devastating fire is understood to have been a tragic accident.
‘Our thoughts are with him, their wider families and everyone who has been impacted by this unimaginable tragedy.’
