This offseason, the New York Jets will have a lot of work to do with their roster. First, they have to figure out the coaching staff, which hasn't gone well thus far.

But once the coaching staff is sorted out, the Jets will turn to free agency, and more specifically, what to do with running back Breece Hall.

According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, the Jets are going to try to extend him to a long-term deal. Hall might not bite and try to hit free agency. However, Cimini reports that the Jets likely won't let that happen, possibly going as far as to franchise tag the star RB.

Jets likely won't let Breece Hall leave in free agency

"Hall, entering his age-25 season, would be in high demand across the league," Cimini writes, "which is why the Jets could utilize the franchise or transition tag on him."

The Jets don't want to let Hall leave, as seen by their trade deadline decision to keep him instead of trading him away. Bringing Hall back is a big priority, and it won't be cheap.

But, if they cannot work out an extension before he's set to be a free agent, the Jets are very likely to either franchise tag or transition tag the star running back.

A franchise tag would allow the Jets to keep Hall for one year at a set amount, which would be around $11 million or so for running backs like Hall.

Using a transition tag could also work, as it would give the Jets the ability to match any offer he receives in free agency, keeping him with the Jets even though he's able to negotiate with other teams.

The Jets are not planning to let Hall leave this offseason, even though they could land a decent compensatory pick in the 2027 NFL Draft if he departs.

Instead, the Jets want to extend Hall, but if that cannot be done, they're likely to franchise tag the standout running back after the team's first 1,000 yard rusher since 2015.
