An Arizona man has been convicted of breaking into an Auburn Hills hotel room and raping a woman last year.
At the conclusion of a jury trial in Oakland County Circuit Court on March 14, Joel Delavara, 36, was found guilty of two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of home invasion for the assault at Sonesta Select Detroit in Auburn Hills. It happened last Aug. 14 after Delavara, of Yuma, Arizona, reportedly gained access to the woman’s room after making a copy of her room key.
The jury acquitted Delavara of a fourth charge — second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Delavara had been out of custody after posting a $10,000 bond but once the verdict was announced last Friday, Judge Yasmine Poles remanded him to the Oakland County Jail.
First-degree criminal sexual conduct carries a penalty of up to life in prison, and home invasion is punishable by up to 20 years behind bars. Delavara is scheduled to be sentenced by Poles on May 13.
