US criticises S.Africa ‘interference’ in Afrikaner resettlement

Washington on Wednesday accused South Africa of “interference” in US efforts to admit white Afrikaners as “refugees” after the local government arrested seven Kenyans it said were not authorized to work in the country.

“We have worked to operate the refugee program within the confines of the law, and South Africa has pledged on multiple occasions not to interfere in our operations — unfortunately, we have now seen interference,” an official from President Donald Trump’s administration said.

South Africa raided an application center staffed by Kenyans from a Christian-based NGO after allegations that they were working illegally on tourist visas — the sort of charge that Trump has seized upon for deportations from the United States.

US State Department lawyers believed that the seven expelled Kenyans were allowed to work under their visas, according to a source familiar with the episode.

Trump, who has repeatedly denounced Africans and called for white immigrants into the United States instead, has ended refugee admissions other than for members of South Africa’s white Afrikaner minority.

Trump contends that the Afrikaners are persecuted by the post-apartheid government, which strongly denies the claims.
