Teenager falls to her death while trying to take photo at lookout

A teenager has fallen to her death on the Sunshine Coast after slipping off a cliff while trying to take a photo.

A 17-year-old girl fell 30-metres down a cliff at a lookout on Queen of Colonies Parade in Moffat Beach about 6.40pm (7.40pm AEDT) after reportedly jumping over a safety fence.

Despite the efforts of bystanders and paramedics, she died at the scene after suffering significant head injuries.

The girl is believed to have been with friends watching the sunset and climbed over the railing to get a better view.

"[She] has slipped and fallen 30m onto the rocks below," Detective Acting Inspector Peter Hocken from Queensland Police said

He added it was a confronting scene and a tragedy for those bystanders, including off-duty medical professionals who tried to save her.

"They managed to locate this young lady and provided as much assistance as they could," he said.

"Unfortunately, she passed away on scene. Her injuries were quite severe.

"Life can be a bit unfair, especially at this time before Christmas."

Another woman suffered minor injuries as she tried to help the teenager.

The rough terrain even caused firefighters to slip as they attempted to reach her.

Authorities warned visitors to stay clear of the fences when visiting lookouts.

"Especially this time of the year, but throughout the whole year, just please respect the barriers that are put in place," Ryan Dubyk from Queensland Fire and Rescue said.

"Just stay back."
