Sydney woman charged after allegedly trying to smuggle $36 million of meth

A woman from Western Sydney has been caught allegedly trying to smuggle nearly 40kg of methamphetamine into Australia.

The 32-year-old woman arrived in Sydney on a flight from South Africa yesterday, but border force officers were suspicious about what was in her two suitcases.

A search allegedly found 20kg of white powder in vacuum-sealed bags, with the second suitcase allegedly containing 19kg of the same substance in similar packaging.

Nearly 40 kilograms of meth was allegedly found in the woman's suitcases.

Presumptive testing of the powder came back positive for methamphetamine, with 39kg of the drug found in the suitcases.

The total value of the methamphetamine is around $36.7 million.

The woman was arrested by Australian Federal Police (AFP) at the scene.

Authorities claim there has been an increase of incidents where people are attempting to smuggle drugs into Australia.

She has now been charged with one count of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug and one count of possessing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.

The woman could face life imprisonment if found guilty of either offence.
