A civil group, Generation for Societal Change (GSC) has noted that a shift in value, mindset and behaviour by Nigerians is required for the country to achieve sustainable national development.

The group called on Nigeria leaders and citizens to lead the global movement for a value-driven culture as the foundation for sustainable prosperity.

Speaking in Abuja, the Global Coordinator, GSC, Engr. Okechuckwu Nworah said the country is facing serious ethical and moral issues, urging citizens to imbibe Nigeria’s national core values.

“Nigeria, Africa and the world today faces complex and interrelated changes- insecurity, hunger, unemployment, weak governance, social fragmentation, and declining trust in institutions. While many seek quick fixes through increased enforcement, regulation or control, GSC champions a non-kinetic approach – one rooted in value re-orientation and behavioural change.

“Our challenges are not merely political or economic, they are fundamentally value challenges. Corruption persists when integrity is optional. Bad leadership thrives when citizens have moral deficiencies. Hunger remains when productivity, accountability, and the dignity of labour are undervalued”, Nworah stated.

He pointed out that the Nigerian Constitution in Chapter II, section 23 already provided a moral compass through seven national ethics (core values: discipline, integrity, dignity of labour, social justice, religious tolerance, self reliance and patriotism.

Nworah who was accompanied at the briefing by GSC Board of Trustee Chairman, Dr Magose Eju; Patron, Musa Odike, General Secretary, Lawrence Huleji and Abuja Coordinator, Abdulazeez Kamal, added that “if these national core values are inernalised in home, workplaces, markets, institutions and public offices, they become the invisible infrastructure for national prosperity”.
