A South Korean sci-fi monster movie featuring Hollywood names, including an X-Men star, Michael Fassbender, has announced a release window, with its first teaser coming fresh from a stormy Cannes premiere.

Na Hong-jin’s Hope gets first teaser and release window

The minute-and-a-half Hope teaser trailer opens on a desolate, bloodied street lined with wrecked cars and abandoned buildings. A background score laced with sirens builds as viewers get to see a glimpse of the aliens terrorizing a remote South Korean town. The teaser hints at a Korean monster movie that refuses to stay inside genre lanes. It will come out in Fall 2026.

The movie’s official synopsis reads, “In the remote South Korea village of Hope Harbor, police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of hunters, including Sung-ki (Zo In-sung) set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading.” Further, it continues, “What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.”

Na Hong-jin writes and directs the feature, which is part of his fourth trip to the Cannes Film Festival. Hope’s cast assembles Korean cinema heavyweights alongside international performers. Hwang Jung-min plays Bum-seok, Squid Game alum Hoyeon plays Sung-ae, and Zo In-sung takes on Sung-ki. Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender also star. Cinematography is handled by Hong Kyung-pyo, with an original score by Michael Abels.

Early reactions from Cannes suggest Hope is one of the most anticipated Korean monster movies. It received a 7-minute standing ovation, and fans will be able to know the reason behind it when Hope releases this fall.
