Public art brings new life to Nizwa’s historic Sur al Aqur wall

Nizwa – OQ  has contributed to the restoration of a section of the historic Sur al Aqur wall in the wilayat of Nizwa, Dakhliyah as part of its community partnership and social investment initiatives.

The project supports the preservation of Oman’s cultural heritage and national identity, while contributing to sustainable social and economic development. It also aims to strengthen Nizwa’s position as a leading cultural and tourism destination, in line with OQ’s long-term focus on education, entrepreneurship and cultural development.

As part of the initiative, 14 illustrated art panels have been installed along the restored wall. Created by Omani artists in collaboration with small and medium enterprises (SMEs), the artworks were supported by voluntary participation from OQ employees, reflecting a spirit of inclusivity and shared community ownership. The panels draw inspiration from the site’s historical memory and rich cultural heritage, bringing local stories and traditions to life.

The project includes the establishment of 14 retail outlets dedicated to Omani entrepreneurs, providing a platform for SMEs to showcase local products and engage directly with visitors and tourists. Together, the restoration works, public art and retail spaces have transformed the historic site into a vibrant destination that combines heritage preservation with economic participation, supporting local diversification efforts and national development priorities.

The inauguration ceremony was held on Sunday in the presence of H E Ahmed bin Saleh al Rashdi, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, Ashraf Hamed al Mamari, Group Chief Executive Officer of OQ, Omani artists, entrepreneurs and local community partners.

The initiative underscores OQ’s commitment to preserving Oman’s historical and civilisational heritage, while enhancing its appeal as a sustainable tourism destination for future generations. By integrating artistic elements into the restoration, the project also aims to inspire creative youth, enrich the cultural movement and provide meaningful opportunities for SME owners to participate in community-based development projects.
