If you’re looking for a last minute bargain – or a particularly merry start to the new year – then there’s some very tempting console deals for the PS5 at Currys.
The PlayStation 5 is five years old this year and normally that’d mean that it was past its peak and starting to see sales slow down. But in actual fact it’s doing better than ever. No doubt helped by the decline in demand for Xbox hardware, the PlayStation 5 is now the default choice for anyone wanting to play high-end, triple-A console games.
Between tariffs and the rising cost of electronics hardware, Sony, like everyone, has struggled to keep the costs down this year, particularly in the US, but there have been some very good deals this autumn and at the moment Currys has offers that in some cases are even better than during Black Friday.
There are three main models of PlayStation 5 but the difference between them is pretty clear cut and basically comes down to how much you want to spend for slightly more options. They all play exactly the same games though, so you don’t have to worry about any games not being compatible.
In fact, the PlayStation 5 also runs almost all PlayStation 4 games as well, so it’s backwards compatible. Plus, if you sign up for the right tier of PlayStation Plus you can play games from older consoles as well.

PS5 Digital Edition console
This doesn’t come with a disc drive and so means you can only play digitally downloaded games on it. That’s all most people do nowadays anyway, so it’s not much of a hardship, and if you change your mind you can always buy a detachable drive later.
These are the current deals from Currys; the D Chassis is the original, larger version of the console, whereas the E Chassis is the newer ‘Slim’ model with a detachable disc drive but a slightly smaller hard drive.
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition ‘E’ Chassis – £299
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition + EA Sports FC 25 bundle – £299
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition + Fortnite bundle
PS5 Standard Edition console
The default version of the console is basically the same thing but with a disc drive. It’s the full fat version of the console but if you’re never going to play any discs with it – whether games or movies – you don’t really need it.
- PlayStation 5 ‘D’ Chassis – £389
- PlayStation 5 ‘E’ Chassis – £389
- PlayStation 5 console + EA Sports FC 25 bundle – £389
PS5 Pro console
This is the pumped up version of the other two models that is more powerful and able to run games at higher frame rates and resolutions. Its processor is around 45% faster, which also makes it better at things like ray-tracing. The difference is still relatively mild though and the Pro is aimed squarely at hardcore gamers that know what they’re in for.
