PM says royal commission into Bondi attack unnecessary

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese continues to push back on a royal commission into the Bondi Beach terror attack, claiming it was in line with the decisions of previous governments.

The opposition has called for a royal commission, while the NSW government has announced it will hold one, with which Albanese said today the federal government will cooperate.

"I just note that there was no royal commission called by the Howard government after Port Arthur. There was no royal commission called by the Abbott government after the Lindt siege," Albanese told reporters today.

"We provided on both those occasions, as the opposition, and I was a part of that opposition, we provided support for national unity at that time."

Albanese said a thorough report from former Secretary of Defence and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Dennis Richardson would be completed by April next year.

By comparison, he said, a royal commission would likely incur delays.

"There hasn't been a royal commission held recently that has not had an extension of time," Albanese said.

He said in this case, many parts of the matter at hand were well-established, including the identities of the alleged attackers and their alleged motivation.

"We are continuing to investigate whether any other connections can be made, and the amount of work that has been done by police and security agencies in a relatively short period of time is quite extraordinary," he said.
