GREEN BAY − Green Bay Packers defensive backs coach Ryan Downard is joining ex-Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley in Miami, according to a report from the Miami Herald.
Downard, 37, reportedly will be a secondary coach for the Dolphins. He’s the first assistant from the Packers to join Hafley.
Hafley was hired as head coach of the Dolphins on Jan. 19 after two seasons in Green Bay. Hafley said he plans to call plays on defense in Miami.
Downard joined the Packers in 2018 as a defensive quality control coach. He later became assistant defensive backs coach from 2019-21, safeties coach in 2022 and was named defensive backs coach in 2023. Downard worked under Mike Pettine, Joe Barry and Hafley while in Green Bay and played a role in Jaire Alexander’s two All-Pro honors, Xavier McKinney’s two consecutive All-Pro seasons, and the development of Evan Williams and Javon Bullard.
The Packers hired ex-Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon to replace Hafley as defensive coordinator.
