'No sense': Danish PM's blunt response as Trump again floats takeover

The Prime Minister of Denmark has called on the Trump administration in the US to "stop the threats" as President Donald Trump again mused on attacking ally Greenland.

"We do need Greenland, absolutely," Trump told The Atlantic in an interview on Sunday.

The topic has been frequently raised by Trump and his political allies, who claim US possession of Greenland is necessary for national security, but has appeared to raise further hackles after the brazen abduction and removal from power of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro by US forces on the weekend.

Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

Katie Miller, wife of White House senior adviser Stephen Miller, posted on X a map of Greenland coloured in stars and stripes and with the written note "SOON".

In response, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen posted a statement on her official website.

"I have to say this very directly to the United States," she said.

"It makes absolutely no sense to talk about the need for the United States to take over Greenland. The United States has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Commonwealth."

She said as a NATO member, Denmark and Greenland were covered alliance's security guarantees, while a defence agreement with the US already gives the country "wide access to Greenland".

She said Denmark had invested heavily in security in the Arctic.

"I would therefore strongly urge the United States to stop the threats against a historically close ally and against another country and another people who have said very clearly that they are not for sale," Frederiksen said.

The Danish Ambassador to the US also posted a response on X.

"We are close allies and should continue to work together as such. US security is also Greenland's and Denmark's security. Greenland is already part of NATO," Jesper Møller Sørensen wrote.

Greenland possesses natural resources that include oil, gas, and rare earth elements.

Denmark is responsible for the autonomous territory's foreign affairs and defence.
