Pokémon is not the only Nintendo franchise to get a new wave of Lego sets this year, with a cool-looking diorama featuring old school Ganon and Princess Zelda.
The Legend Of Zelda is 40 years old next month, but back in the ’80s the concept of video game merchandise barely existed. You never got even basic stuff, like action figures and T-shirts, for most franchises, and yet somehow Zelda had its own cartoon series. It was awful, but it was a lot more than most games ever had.
Nowadays, even the most obscure game can end up with its own line of merch, but it’s only a rarefied few that are deemed worthy of a Lego set. Overwatch and Fortnite have been, as have Horizon Zero Dawn and Pac-Man, but in recent years there’s a been a real push to recreate Nintendo video games in brick-based form.
Just this week we saw the first Pokémon sets, but that’s in addition to existing Super Mario and Animal Crossing themes. There’s also been one Zelda set so far, an excellent, but rather expensive, recreation of the Great Deku Tree. But now there’s a second, more affordable set that pays homage to the end of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time on the N64.
Originally released in 1998, Ocarina Of Time is one of the most acclaimed video games ever, and for decades after its release was regarded as the greatest of all time. It was hugely innovative in terms of its 3D exploration, combat, and camera control and Rockstar Games, amongst many others, credit it for directly influencing their own games.
It also had a really cool ending, where Link confronts Ganondorf in the ruins of his castle, only for the King of Evil to transform into the monstrous Ganon (which is how he’d traditionally been portrayed up to that point, in the 2D games). With the help of Princess Zelda he’s eventually defeated, which is exactly what’s going on in this new Lego set.
The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time – The Final Battle is made up of 1,003 Lego pieces and features a ‘crumbling’ castle tower and rubble with recovery hearts underneath it. Plus, when you push a button Ganondorf rises up, ready for his transformation.
There’s never previously been a minifigures of Ganondorf and while there was a Zelda figure in the more expensive Great Deku Tree set it was based on her appearance in the Breath Of The Wild, not any of the older titles. The Link figure is similar to the previous set but comes with Navi, the Master Sword, Hylian shield, and Megaton Hammer.
The centrepiece of the set is, obviously, the big giant Ganon figure, which looks great with his two massive swords, just like he had in the game. You can also see the weak point on his tail which is (spoilers!) how you beat him.
Lego is never cheap but relatively speaking this isn’t too bad, at £99.99, which is more than half that of the Great Deku Tree and less even than the new Pikachu set.
It’ll be available to pre-order from the Lego website today and will be released on March 1. It measures 29cm wide, 18cm deep, and 17cm high.
In recent years, fans have increasingly called for a modern remake of Ocarina Of Time. There’s been nothing from Nintendo to suggest it’s happening though and so far, at least, Lego sets have not been an indicator of future game plans.
