Emily in Paris season five has been labelled ‘garbage’ and ‘terrible’, but that hasn’t stopped it from reaching the top of the Netflix charts.
Starring Lily Collins as the titular marketing executive, the latest installment of the hit show has seen Emily Cooper swap Paris for Rome as she endeavours to expand Savior.
But challenges in the workplace aren’t all that she faces, with her friendships and romantic life put under immense strain as she travels back and forth between the bustling cities.
It has hit the number one most-watched spot on the Netflix TV charts, despite receiving lacklustre reviews from critics and fans alike.
How, you may ask? It could be that fans ‘hate watching’ the series – despite slamming the characters and plot points – has pushed its viewing figures up after season five arrived on the streaming giant.

Writing on X, Bananafrancesca said: ‘The thing about #EmilyinParis is that I hate every choice every character makes and yet I continue to watch it every season.’
Alexhaobao echoed a similar sentiment, commenting: ‘I am happy to report that the new season of Emily in Paris is just as garbage as it’s always been. Obsessed.’
Another viewer, 90sAngel, even stated that, despite the show ‘p***ing me off’, they continue to watch.
Similarly, Logladytrainee posted: ‘Ahh Emily in Paris. Are the performances good? No. costumes? Also no. Is it shot well? Actually, it looks like s**t. The plots? hackneyed and terrible. I missed it so much!!!’
Season five holds a respectable 75% rating from critics, but that falls to 41% from fans on the Popcornmeter.
Metro’s own four-star review adds: ‘It’s not going to move you to new emotional heights, but it’ll leave you feeling optimistic, charmed and ready for more.’
Should you watch Emily in Paris season five? TV journalist Charlotte Minter gives her verdict...
I often start Netflix’s Emily in Paris each season feeling slightly silly.
The heightened drama, the insane outfits and the somewhat unrealistic scenarios can make me feel like I’m watching a version of a Disney Channel show for adults.
But by the end, I’ve fallen hook, line and sinker for the plot, characters and general joie de vivre that the show ignites.
This series was no different, and I felt myself becoming even more attached to some of the romances and friendships in ways that I hadn’t previously.
The London Evening Standard said: ‘Minnie Driver joins the cast, bringing a much-needed injection of camp, self-aware energy, but she still can’t save this terrible show from itself.’
Slant Magazine blasted: ‘The show’s money-hungry motives are baked into the very fabric of its plot and character motivations, robbing it of any potential value as comfort TV, or even camp.’
As it stands, Emily in Paris has not yet been renewed for a sixth season.
Season five ended with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) taking the job Emily secured for him on a billionaire’s yacht in Greece, sending her a postcard asking her to spent time with him there after she and Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) called it quits for good.
When asked if the next season could see Emily jet to Greece, creator Darren Star, told Deadline that he hopes Emily will ‘say yes’ to the invitation.
‘[Emily and Gabriel] reconnected in a nice way. [As for] where that takes them, I think it definitely hints at the idea that they’ll stay in each other’s lives,’ he teased.
Emily in Paris seasons one to five are streaming now on Netflix
