Polls opened in Myanmar on Sunday as the junta held an election it sees as a reset for a country mired in civil war, but widely decried as a charade aimed at embedding the military deeper into power.
The junta says the poll, the first to be held since a 2021 coup, will restore democracy to a nation wracked by rebellion, which has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions more, leaving around a third of the population dependent on aid to survive.
