A new year is coming, and with it some new food at M&S that is bound to prove popular with those taking weight loss jabs like Ozempic or Mounjaro.

Marks & Spencer has unveiled a new range called Nutrient Dense, featuring salads, snacks and meals packed with fibre, vitamins and minerals.

And while anyone can eat the dishes, the retailer has specifically stated that the food will be helpful for those ‘monitoring their calorie intake due to lifestyle, age or weight loss medication’.

The last 12 months have seen a massive rise in the popularity of these drugs – often called GLP-1 agonists – which are known to reduce people’s appetites and increase feelings of fullness.

With around two million people in the UK thought to be using GLP-1s, retailers like M&S are now creating food products to work alongside the injectables.

What’s in the new Nutrient Dense range at M&S?

The are 20 items in the range which will be available from January 5, and according to M&S, the products are all made with wholefoods and store cupboard ingredients.

Each product contains at least 1 of 10 micronutrients, such as vitamin D, iron, folate and vitamin B12.

Products include Cocoa Chia Mousse, Roasted Butternut and Almond Grains, Satay Chicken and Black Rice Mango Salad, Super Seeded Crackers, Romesco Chicken, Tandoori Chicken and Cauli Rice Prawn Paella.

The range also features the H₅O shot and bread such as the Super Seeded Oaty Bread.

The H₅O shot is made with coconut water, blended with cold-pressed ginger juice, fruit and vegetable fibres, sea moss and unique botanicals – panax ginseng, Japanese honeysuckle, ginger, yellow passionfruit and green cardamom.

It is named H₅O because of the five botanical ingredients, which have been selected and verified by scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Prices for the new products haven’t been confirmed as of yet.

Speaking about the new launch, Grace Ricotti, the head of food nutrition at M&S, said: ‘Our Nutrient Dense range is perfect for customers looking to support their health as each recipe is packed with the key nutrients we all need in our diets.

‘With the increase in popularity of weight-loss injections, a reduced appetite can mean missing out on important nutrients, and that’s why nutrient density is so important.

‘These new meals, snacks and drinks can help everyone get more fibre, vitamins and minerals in their diet. We challenged ourselves to make products that are denser in nutrients than calories, so every single mouthful is packed full of more of the good stuff we all need.’

She continues: ‘The importance of us all eating enough fibre cannot be overestimated. As well as helping day to day with effective digestion, long-term it is important to reduce the risk of bowel cancer and so many other diseases. Products such as our Nutrient Dense Super Seeded Oaty Bread, which has 13g of fibre in two slices, are aimed at making it super easy for customers to reach the recommended 30g a day.’

M&S aren’t the first to create a range like this, though, as Morrisons also recently announced a brand new ready meal range for those taking the likes of Wegovy.

The supermarket is set to launch a selection of 53 Applied Nutrition items on shelves in January, and seven of these products will be known as ‘Small & Balanced’ meals.

These meals have all been ‘created to deliver a nutrient-dense and controlled portion tailored to the needs of customers embarking on a weight-loss journey with medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro’.
