Manchester United look set to appoint an interim manager for the rest of the season, before making a permanent appointment in the summer.

Darren Fletcher is currently leading the team on a temporary basis, taking he reins after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

The Scot took charge for the first time in midweek, with Manchester United drawing 2-2 at Burnley in the Premier League.

There remains the possibility that Fletcher could stay in charge for the rest of the season, while other former Manchester United players have been approached about an interim position.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy are all candidates to lead the Red Devils until the summer, having all managed the team in the past.

Fletcher will be in the dugout when the Red Devils host Brighton in the FA Cup third round on Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford.

That could be the former midfielder’s last game in charge, though, with the Red Devils looking to make a decision for the rest of the season soon.

ESPN report that Manchester United want to ‘have clarity’ on who will be in charge for the rest of the season early next week.

Solskjaer is reportedly due for a meeting with the Red Devils hierarchy on Saturday, with Carrick having already spoken to the decision-makers.

Fletcher is believed to have impressed the Old Trafford chiefs so far during his caretaker stint, although a draw at Turf Moor will not have blown anyone away.

Speaking on his future ahead of the Brighton clash, Fletcher revealed he has not spoken to co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, saying: ‘I’ve not, no. I speak to Omar [Berrada] and Jason [Wilcox], that’s how the process works.

‘For me, I’ve been focusing on the job in hand. There have been no thoughts from me on my future. I lead the team, guide the team, there’s been no conversations outside of those two people.’

The 41-year-old suggested he intends to lean on the club’s academy players while he is in control.

‘I think historically this club is built around the academy, we’ve got an amazing academy, our record speaks for itself,’ he said.

‘I can’t stand here and say anything other than that. We’ve got an amazing record which is hard to beat. We have some amazing players with some amazing talent, what I see is a lot of hard work, humble, young players who aren’t perfect because they’re young and learning.

‘We ask too much of young people in society at times, and in general. We have to let them learn, educate them, help them, understand they will make mistakes.

‘With good guidance, all of us play a part in developing them to be Manchester United players and people. My working with them as individuals and throughout the academy I deal with hard-working, honest and coachable, super-talented kids.

‘We have a lot of talent in our academy and hopefully they can showcase themselves like Shea [Lacey] did.’

After the FA Cup tie with tie with the Seagulls, the Red Devils host Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday January 17, which would be some fixture for a new boss to take charge of.

After that comes an even bigger test, with a trip to Arsenal the following weekend.
