A 30-year-old Detroiter accused of killing a man in a hit-and-run at a Madison Heights bus stop has been ordered to have a competency evaluation.
At a hearing Wednesday in 43rd District Court, Magistrate Michael Mitchell filed the psychiatric/psychological testing referral for Jalal Salim Safah, who’s charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death.
The victim, identified by police as 67-year-old Sammie Baker of Detroit, was reportedly struck by a vehicle while waiting for a bus on Dequindre Road north of 11 Mile Road on Jan. 29, shortly before 5 p.m. He was transported to Corewell Health/Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Detectives with the Madison Heights Police Department subsequently located the vehicle involved and arrested Safah. He was arraigned on Feb. 1 where bond was set at $10.000. He’s no longer listed on the Oakland County Jail roster.
Safah’s next court date is pending.
