A major motorway has closed in both directions after a lorry fire caused plumes of smoke to cover vehicles.

Traffic has come to a stop on the M25 near Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, following the fire this afternoon.

Fire crews have been pictured at the scene as queues back up for miles during Friday rush hour.

National Highways has urged drivers to avoid the area with of delays of up to 45 minutes.

They said: ‘The M25 in Hertfordshire is closed in both directions between J25 and J24 due to a lorry fire.

‘Emergency Services including Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue are in attendance.
