Learner driver accused of clocking extraordinary speed on Monash Freeway

A learner driver accused of driving at an extraordinary speed has been caught in Melbourne's east.

Highway patrol officers clocked an Audi travelling at 226km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Monash Freeway near Jacksons Road in Mulgrave about 3am today.

The driver, a 23-year-old man from Narre Warren, was allegedly an L-plater and accompanied by a woman with a disqualified licence.

The Audi was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1016.

The driver will be charged on summons with being an unaccompanied learner and speeding offences.
